In 2011, disenchanted by my fashion career, I decided to swap luxury rags for sweaty shorts to become a Bikram yoga teacher. Throughout my years of teaching and practicing different styles of yoga, I realised the magnitude of what yoga truly is – a physical, spiritual and ethical practice. I couldn’t stop at Bikram!
I have since qualified as a therapist and taken other trainings such as Vinyasa, Jivamukti, Anatomy, Yin and others. As well as teaching yoga to the general public, I specialise in bespoke yoga sequences including Yin yoga, yoga Therapy and prenatal yoga, making yoga accessible to all. Throughout my years of teaching, I have come to realise the extent to which we all have different bodies and different life experiences and these create a unique life story for each of us. We all encounter obstacles, once we become aware of them, we can address them. That is only half of the journey: awareness, acceptance and peeling away the emotional, mental, physiological and physical layers, which hold us back is the next step. When teaching I bring all these aspects into consideration so I can empower and inspire each practitioner to find their own yogi within so after class students can allow yoga to permeate into everything they do.
Yoga, in all its aspects, is a path to balance so I incorporate different and creative asana sequences into my classes and include Sanskrit chanting, meditation, Nidra and breathing practices.
Through yoga we learn who we are, physically and all the rest. We are all unique, in the way we react to situations and in the way our femur bone is angled in our hip socket!
Skeletal differences, life experiences, injuries etc create a unique life story for each of us. I think understanding this as a teacher is one of the most important aspects of being able, through time, to nudge individual students to their edge (be it emotional, spiritual, physiological or physical) so they can take a peak beyond the cliff and in time inspire them to approach it and make it recede.
Yoga has stretched, healed and strengthened my body, belief system, mind and soul, in unexpected and amazing ways. The practice of yoga is a harmonising self-study, which helps to align one with inner and outer peace as well as the earth and all it’s inhabitants.
